The Cure playing before Christmas — I was up from 7:30am on ticket day, watched them vanish, and still managed a standing ticket. Robert Smith played for about two and a half hours with barely a pause, came back for four encores, and the setlist ran to 40 songs. Between songs he was surprisingly shy and smiley. Half the fun was the crowd, too: plenty of middle-aged men with backcombed hair and smoky eyeliner. I never thought I'd get to see this band live.
